POTENTIAL HISTORY-MAKING BILLS AND AMENDMENTS ASSENTED TO IN NIGERIA
The Senate has approved the amendment of the 1999 constitution reducing the age limit of qualification for the offices of President, Governors and Senators to 35 years, while the age limit for members of the House of Representatives and State Houses of Assembly was pegged at 25 years.
The Senate also approved the position of independent candidature in Nigeria’s electoral process, scrapped state independent electoral commissions, and separated the offices of the Attorney General of the Federation from the office of the minister of Justice while also approving autonomy for local governments.
97 lawmakers took part in the exercise which witnessed the use of electronic voting in the passage of 29 Bills and rejection of 4 out of the 33 amendments for consideration.
